The term lagoon comes from the Italian word laguna, which means "lake" or "pond". At campsites, however, it is neither a lake nor a pond. It is a shallow body of water protected by a natural barrier that mimics the edges of a beach, and may open out onto a larger body of water. A lagoon is made up of salt water, fresh water or a mixture of the two.
