Wouldn't it be a good time to explore the treasures of La Romieu?
Take a stroll through this picturesque village in the Gers, where every narrow street seems to tell a story from the past.
The collegiate church of Saint-Pierre, a jewel of French heritage.
Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it is a masterpiece of medieval architecture. Its Romanesque style, with its magnificent arches and imposing vaults, immediately plunges you into the atmosphere of a time when time seemed to move more slowly.
What makes this place unique is its interior decoration, full of historical details and ancient art. The sculptures are a real eye-catcher: religious scenes, animal figures and symbolic elements that bear witness to the spiritual and cultural wealth of the period.
The Cloister is a place of peace set around a central square, with a series of arcades opening onto a carefully landscaped garden. The columns supporting the arches of the cloister are all decorated with fine, varied sculptures, with every detail bearing witness to the artistic depth of the medieval era. The entire cloister, made of light-coloured stone, contrasts magnificently with the deep blue of the sky as a backdrop, especially on sunny days when the light floods the space and brings out the subtle nuances of the sculptures and stones. Another curiosity of the cloister of La Romieu is its capitals. Each one is decorated with a different scene: fantastic animals, biblical figures or scenes from everyday life at the time. These capitals are a veritable history book carved in stone.
The layout of its towers, adorned with a double-revolution staircase, and its single-nave church are still authentic architectural treasures.
Visits are possible all year round (prefer September for the light and lower visitor numbers).
Les Jardins de Coursiana, a haven of peace and beauty
These gardens, which have been rewarded with the 'Remarkable Garden' label, are a real delight, both poetic and full of charm. They are located just a stone's throw from the village, in a verdant setting that invites you to stroll and contemplate. As soon as you enter, you'll be greeted by paths lined with boxwood, carefully trimmed hedges and plants offering a palette of colours all year round. At the heart of the garden is a fountain. Its gently trickling water adds to the serenity of the place. Around it, beds of brilliantly coloured flowers - roses, lavender, iris and other Mediterranean plants - provide an explosion of colour and scent. Shrubs, fruit trees and aromatic plants add diversity to the landscape, creating areas of freshness and calm.
The arboretum in the Coursiana gardens at La Romieu is a marvel for botany enthusiasts and nature lovers alike. With 700 different species, it is one of the finest collections of trees and plants in south-west France. It offers a fascinating journey through an impressive diversity of plant life, with trees from all over the world, including some rare or little-known species. Every season, the arboretum reveals new facets of its plant treasures: from spring flowers to shimmering autumn leaves, every moment of the year has its own charm in this lush space.
The gardens at Coursiana are inspired by this living, ever-changing landscape. The charm of these gardens lies in the alchemy between human care for nature and the wild freedom it retains.
