The must-sees in Veules-les-Roses

The construction of Veules-les-Roses on the Côte d'Albâtre dates to the 3rd century. It was a prosperous village for a time, and was able to withstand events such as famine, invasions and fires. The village was even considered a fashionable seaside resort in the 19th century, with sea bathing, and many artists who enjoyed the area contributed to the resort's golden age until the Second World War, when much of the commune was destroyed and occupied by Nazi Germany.image

Where to go in Veules-les-Roses?

Today, 80 years after the D-Day landings, the village of Veules has been rebuilt, and it's a delight to stroll through the flower-filled lanes and admire the half-timbered thatched cottages, the Belle Epoque houses and all the charm that emanates from strolling along the river Veules and along the seafront, then admire the watercress crops near the springs in the watercress beds, as well as the old mills that are now part of the pretty countryside.

Built between 1520 and 1612, with a bell tower dating back as far as the 13th century, you won't want to miss the imposing and superb church of Saint-Martin. Listed as a historic monument, the sacristy dates from the 19th century and the interior is in the Norman tradition. Admire the ornate pillars and the frescoes on the choir vault, which have recently been restored.

The remains of the church of Saint-Nicolas can also be found in the middle of a square. The ruins of its ashlar and sandstone construction, of which only the three-sided apse remains, were built in the 11th century and demolished in the 19th century.

The beach at Veules-les-Roses is best visited at low tide. This is when the rough sea gives way to a large expanse of fine sand, with sandbanks that gradually appear in the distance and in the middle of the water. At the foot of the cliffs, a small layer of water usually forms at low tide, where periwinkles and prawns gather - don't forget your landing nets!

What sea does Veules-les-Roses border?

If you decide to take a dip in the sea at Veules-les-Roses, you'll be swimming in the English Channel. Its clear, shimmering waters offer all the pleasures of sea bathing, even if it's often very cool!

Just off the beach is the oyster-farming site where the Veulaise oyster is grown. This oyster is apparently of the highest quality, thanks to the mixing of the oyster beds by the tides and the fresh water brought in from the cliffs. This delicious-tasting oyster has been around for over 25 years.

You can also discover Veules-les-Roses along the river on a walking route signposted by small signs that tell you all about the village's treasures. You'll discover the secrets of the watering hole, Victor Hugo's cave (the author spent several periods in Veules-les-Roses, where he stayed with his friend Paul Meurice), the watercress beds and the mills.

Finally, if you like hiking, the GR21 passes through Veules-les-Roses. It will take you to Sotteville and reveal some sumptuous scenery from the top of the limestone cliffs. This is a well-marked, fairly easy walk.

Why the name veules-les-roses?

It was in the 14th century that the name Wellas was certified from the Old English word for "watercourse", a direct link with "La Veules". It was common then, and still is today, for watercourses to give their name to the commune. Here, we're highlighting France's smallest river, which is a great tourist attraction for the commune.
