Discover Marseillan
Marseillan is full of places to discover: its historic centre, its marina, the Bagnas reserve, the Canal du Midi and the Noilly Prat house. Discover this town, founded in the 6th century.
Originally a fishing port, then a commercial port, Marseillan's small harbour, now a marina, is particularly charming and a must-see in the town. Stroll along the quays, admiring the sumptuous boats of the Mediterranean coastline and choosing the restaurant that most appeals to you. There are plenty of them around the port. The huge wine cellars and numerous merchants' houses bear witness to the port's prosperous past.
As you stroll through the streets of Marseillan, don't forget to admire the statue of Marianne. This was the first statue representing the Republic to be placed here in 19th-century France. Then the Place Carnot, which houses the Place Couverte at the entrance to the old town. A beautiful 17th-century square where the people of Marseilles gather, it's a warm and welcoming place to meet up and have a drink.image
The Grand Marché de Marseillan is held on Tuesday mornings on the seafront from June to September, where you can sample or discover the region's specialities, both traditional and tasty. It's a real treat, and one of the town's must-sees, as well as your holiday destination of course!
During a boat trip on the Canal du Midi, a UNESCO World Heritage site whose last stop is Marseillan, you can discover the Pointe des Onglous, topped by its red and white lighthouse. This is the eastern end of the Canal du Midi, where the water from the canal flows into the Etang de Thau. This landscape offers a magnificent panorama at sunset.image
The Bagnas Nature Reserve lies between Cap d'Agde and Marseillan. 250 species of birds can be observed above this reserve of more than 560 hectares at various locations such as the observation area on the main road or along the Canal du Midi or towards the Onglous lighthouse. Nature lovers will be won over, and those who also love hiking will fall in love with the place, as the hiking trails here are on a scale commensurate with the immensity of the reserve.
