The places not to be missed in the Doubs
Besançon is also the capital of the Franche-Comté region and is renowned for its remarkable citadel which dominates the city. Go and explore the treasures of the historic centre to discover the arcaded houses of the Vauban quay, overlooking the Doubs river, the superb Renaissance-style Granvelle palace or the splendid astronomical clock (30,000 parts) of the Saint-Jean cathedral. Discover also the Promenade Micaud on the banks of the Doubs and the botanical garden where you can find a large number of flowers, plants and trees.
The Royal Saltworks of Arc-et-Senans is a complex of eleven buildings, classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1982. Built by the Enlightenment architect Claude-Nicolas Ledoux, it constitutes an important archive of French industrial architecture. In the same place, the garden festival takes place every year during the summer.
Built on the banks of the Loue in the 6th century, the town of Ornans, nicknamed the Little Venice of the Comte, is the birthplace of the artist Gustave Courbet. From the Grand Pont footbridge which spans the river, you can observe the charming old houses on stilts and their reflection in the water. In the house where the painter and sculptor was born, you will find the Courbet museum where a large number of his works are exhibited.
If you want to see a real natural spectacle, go to the side of Villers-le-Lac to watch the river Doubs make a 27 meters jump! The Saut du Doubs is a superb waterfall that flows through a green and wild area and is one of the most coveted natural sites in Franche-Comté. You can observe these waterfalls, even more spectacular after a heavy rain, from one of the two lookouts installed for this purpose.
Like Besançon, the town of Montbéliard is a town of Art and History and is full of treasures, testifying to a beautiful architectural heritage. You can see the pretty coloured facades, but also the Place Saint-Martin and its beautiful buildings, the old covered market, well preserved, and the sublime castle of the Dukes of Wurtemberg and its two towers.
