What to see in the two Sevres?
The Marais Poitevin Regional Nature Park is both a landmark and a natural signature of the Deux-Sèvres region. It is a varied territory with a rare biodiversity. The Venise Verte is the wet marsh of the Marais Poitevin. It is a peaceful, quiet and protected place with an undeniable charm.
The site of the Tumulus of Bougon is a megalithic site, you will learn more about the funerary architecture in prehistoric times and you will be led to the necropolis of Bourgon. Round in shape, these are huge tombs (one of them is 72 metres long) made of stone and earth. They are one of the oldest examples of funerary architecture in the world. The museum of the Tumulus of Bougon will make you discover the way of life and the culture of the Neolithic man and the funeral architecture of the time. A unique place!
A charming town with a rich cultural and built heritage, Niort has a very welcoming historic centre that you will want to stroll through. The keep is all that remains of the 12th century fortress, one of the most beautiful in France. On the terrace of the dungeon, a magnificent panorama of the roofs of the city awaits you. From the banks of the Sèvre Niortaise you can enjoy a beautiful view of the keep and the spires of the church of Saint-André. The Coulée Verte promises pleasant strolls along the water's edge. The Bernard d'Agesci museum offers to explore its collections of Fine Arts, Natural History and Conservatory of Education.
The Zoodyssée is an ecological animal park located in the heart of the Chizé national forest. More than 60 different species are housed there. Ibexes, deer, fallow deer, roe deer, lynxes, storks, otters, birds of prey... In all, 500 animals of the European fauna that you will discover along your way. A playground, a mini-farm, educational activities and exhibitions on biodiversity are also available.
Old half-timbered houses, the church of Notre-Dame-de-la-Couldre and its Romanesque portal, the clock tower, the remains of the old castle... are some of the wonders you can visit in the medieval town of Parthenay, located on the banks of the Thouet, a town of Art and History and a former stage on the pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela.
Thouars, another town of Art and History in the Deux-Sèvres, stands on a rocky promontory above the Thouet. Its castle of the Dukes of Tremoidy is a listed historic monument. Don't forget to visit the Saint-Médard church, in the Poitevin Romanesque style, as well as the town hall, the former Saint-Laon abbey.
