The riches of the Cher
Bourges is the capital of the department and is famous for its music festival, the Printemps de Bourges. It is a very pleasant town with an important architectural heritage, starting with its Gothic Renaissance style hotels, half-timbered houses and pretty cobbled streets. The 15th-century Jacques Coeur Palace will enhance your visit to the old town, as will the majestic Saint-Etienne's Cathedral, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, whose characteristic feature is the absence of a transept. The stained glass windows and the sculptures on the central portal are sublime!
The castle of Meillant is a former fortified castle rebuilt in large part after the Hundred Years War. Located in the south of the Cher and 40 km from Bourges, its architecture is exceptional, the lion's tower in particular being richly decorated.
If you visit the Cher, you can't miss the gardens of Notre-Dame d'Orsan Priory. Located in Maisonnais, this sumptuous garden is both a soothing and fragrant stopover. Around the former monastery, you will find a well-kept medieval-style green space with orchards, vegetable gardens and a fountain.
10 km from the Château de Meillant, the Abbey of Noirlac is a stopover on the Jacques-Coeur route. It is one of the best preserved Cistercian abbeys. Founded in 1150 and built in the 12th and 13th centuries, it was last renovated in 1980. It now houses a cultural meeting centre.
Situated to the north-east of Bourges, the small town of Sancerre, which has just been voted France's favourite village at the end of June 2021, is famous for its vineyard of the same name, which produces white and red wine over a total area of 2700 hectares. You can see the vineyards and the banks of the Loire River from the old town situated at 310 metres on a hill. Three kilometres away, the village of Chavignol will delight you with its famous crottin. A perfect tasting experience with a good glass of Sancerre.
Classified as one of the most beautiful villages in France, Apremont-sur-Allier is a picturesque medieval village. Take a stroll to explore the flowered facades of the Berrichon houses. A beautiful floral park opened in 1970 to flatter the place, punctuated by oddities such as a pagoda bridge and a Turkish pavilion, perhaps made to provoke curiosity...
