The Luberon is a low mountain range in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region. It stretches from the Alpes de Haute-Provence to the Vaucluse. If you are looking for, for your next holidays, a destination where the landscapes change in a few kilometres, where small high perched villages offer you panoramas all more beautiful than the others and small streets where you can stroll at will, no doubt, the Luberon is waiting for you. Going on holiday in the Luberon is the assurance of taking in the view almost permanently with natural sites sometimes "reworked by man". It is notably the case of the ochre quarries and mines of the Luberon but also an astonishing geological specificity, to say the least, the Provençal Colorado. This landscape has been shaped by erosion for thousands of years but above all by man. The ochriers dug the soil by hand to find the pigments. The paths were then formed, following the blows of picks. Nature, for its part, shaped the paths and these rocky mounds called fairy chimneys. The former are access routes and the latter are extraordinary natural pyramids. The palette of colours ranging from purple to yellow, the paths of ochre sand and the unusual shapes of the chimneys make all the splendour of the place. It sometimes feels like a western. This is indeed the origin of the site's name "Provençal Colorado". The walk in the middle of the colourful world of ochres is exceptional and can be done on foot or by bicycle thanks to numerous marked paths.
Lovers of spoiled old stones
Nature is good, but the Luberon is also a considerable architectural heritage. It is a multitude of small villages, some of which are perched like sentinels offering magnificent panoramas and others which are an invitation to stroll. It is for example Isle sur la Sorgues, Apt, Cucuron which inspired Daudet for his story of the "Curé de Cucugnan", Forcalquier and its citadel... which touches the sky, Gordes, etc. Precisely, when you are in Gordes, don't miss the visit of the Abbey of Notre Dame de Sénanque. Still occupied by Cistercian monks, it is surrounded by lavender fields. All this is just a small glimpse of what awaits you.
Earthly food too...
The culinary heritage of the Luberon is in its image, of an almost infinite richness and variety.
It goes from truffles to olive oil, from cold meats to succulent Luberon lamb, not to mention the numerous goat's cheeses produced in the region, some of which even have an AOC (Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée). And to accompany all this, give in to the temptation, with moderation it goes without saying, of the blood of the vine, in this case from the Côte du Lubéron (AOC). It reflects the image of the region. Available in red, white and rosé, it is a wine of character but as warm as the landscapes.
