The Gard bridge

Pont du Gard
Pont du Gard

The Pont du Gard (or Gard bridge) is a beautiful three-level aqueduct, built between 40 and 60 AD and located in the commune of Vers-Pont-du-Gard, not far from Nîmes. During your holidays, don't hesitate to discover it... on foot!

Discover the Pont du Gard during your camping holiday

The Pont du Gard was once used to carry water from Uzès to Nîmes. At 49 metres high, it is the highest bridge-aqueduct ever built by the Romans.

Partly destroyed, the bridge now stretches 360 metres in its longest section (compared to 50 kilometres at its origin). Built of limestone blocks from the surrounding area, its yellow hues are light and warm and its large arches give it a slender and elegant appearance. The titanic work involved in its construction is still astonishing today. In summer, the walk along the remains of the aqueduct, which spans the Gardon, is refreshing and pleasant, as is resting in the shade of the arches. Discovery areas, including the museum, the cinema and temporary exhibitions, extend the visit to the bridge. It has been listed as a Unesco World Heritage Site since 1985.
