Visit the Lascaux cave during your camping holiday
The prehistoric cave of Lascaux was discovered in 1940 by four teenagers wandering in the woods. It was impossible for them to guess that they were making one of the greatest archaeological discoveries of all time. In a state of preservation remarkable for its 17,000 years, the cave offers magnificent cave paintings: yellow horses, red cows, deer and black bulls seem to be leaping on the walls.
But from 1955 onwards, Lascaux began to fall victim to its success. With 1,200 tourists a day, the grounds were deteriorating because of the CO2 emitted by visitors. Mosses and algae grow on the walls, leading to the closure of the cave to the public in 1963. The cave we visit today is a truer-than-life copy located 200 metres from the original site. Lascaux II has thus been open to the public since 1983. Here you can admire the rigorously reproduced paintings: scene of the Well, frieze of the Deer, panels of the Black Cow, and many other wonders that are part of our history, which can also be admired at the Centre d'art préhistorique du Thot in Thonac.
