At the edge of the eponymous bay, Arcachon has been a famous seaside resort for nearly two centuries. Called a ‘small sea’, its 1500-hectare bay, whose waters come from the ocean and many streams, is the colour of a lagoon. A golden crown of white sand borders the bay, culminating in a 104 meter point, le Pilat, queen of the dunes.
